| From The President |
 |
Fall has arrived bringing the energy and enthusiasm of our students back to all of our schools! Summer whipped by in its usual warp speed and now we are right in to our next cycle of plans to further advance the missions of our great schools.
On behalf of CAISAP, I extend our most sincere thanks to Derek Fraser who has been a constant and dedicated CAISAP volunteer and has been leading our plans for this conference. Since my early days of involvement with CAISAP, Derek has always been a champion of our work and a friendly face with endless energy and ideas. We will all miss him greatly and wish him much success in his career.
In 4 months time, we will gather for our bi-annual CAISAP conference in Banff! I am stunned that almost 2 years has passed and we are approaching our next conference. Last minute details are being finalized on the conference and registration is now open for our January 29-31 conference.
A unique feature of this conference is an addition of pre-conference PD. John Davies is leading the CAIS Advancement Module 1 and 2. If you are interested in participating in this opportunity, plan to arrive a day early for the conference (Jan. 28). With thanks to John and CAIS, there is no cost for this leadership training (just your meals and accommodation).
Please make note of the November 21st nomination deadlines for the Sam Heaman Award and the Rising Star Awards. I encourage you to participate by nominating a colleague. Details may be found on the web-site and in this newsletter.
In January we will elect a new CAISAP executive at our AGM. If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity or serving on the executive, please contact me or Louis de Melo at Ashbury College. As with many volunteer roles, I have found my role to be an incredible win-win experience gaining friendships and productive networking along the way.
There have been many transitions in our CAISAP membership and I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of our new members and hope to meet many of you in January!
Cheers,
Jeanette Hepburn

| Is Your School's CAISAP listing Up-to-date? |
 |
|
We do our best to keep the directory listings up-to-date for each school's Advancement Office, but as people come and go this can be a challenge.
Please take a minute to visit the directory and look up a list for your school. If there are people who are missing from the list, or who should not be listed, please let us know! While you are there, please take a minute to update your own info. For instance, is your business contact info listed?
Lastly, if there is someone new in your office, please forward this newsletter to them and encourage them to join the directory. Thanks for your help!

| 5 Minutes With Laura Edwards |
 |
Laura Edwards has a life that has come full circle. Arriving at the York House School as a student in 1968, she returned to join the board of governors in 1995 and is the proud mother of two daughters, Amelia ’08 and Devon ’10 both of who have attended the York House School since kindergarten.
Since she started in 1997, the annual fund has grown from less than $10,000 per year to over a million dollars in the last two years. Her office just completed a $12 million dollar campaign that had a $10 million goal. The advancement staff has grown from two to five staff (3 of which are alums). Laura is excited about the future at the York House School and has long term plans to sustain annual giving at over a million dollars with 80% of those funds being undesignated, building a $30 million endowment and paying off the mortgage as soon as possible to make way for a new senior school building.
Laura started her working life as a sales person in the hotel business working up to the Director of Marketing and Sales for the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto. In the late eighties she bought her father's financial services company and grew it for ten years before selling it to her husband. During this time she was the chair of the Advancement Committee and President of the York House School Alumnae Association. Being an alumnae and parent gives her instant credibility when talking to potential or current families as well as fellow alumnae, so understandably, the Board hired her in 1997.
She stresses the importance of staying focused on fundraising and letting volunteers plan and execute the special events and sales. Laura advises her colleagues to clearly understand that we as advancement professionals are in the unique position of having access to all the influence and affluence in this country. With that, if we do our job, we will play a key role in building great Canadian schools that teach and nurture leaders who can change the world forever. If we don't wake up every day excited about who we're going to meet, what we're going to learn, and the difference we can make by securing a gift every day, we're in the wrong profession. She encourages us to give back to the industry, get involved at the committee and board level with CAISAP, AFP, CAGP and others and above all be interesting to your donors and yourself. Her last bit of advice for up and coming independent advancement professionals is: never apologize for the work we do, make the ask, be considerate, say thank you constantly, be proud, and above all, remember the golden rule.
When not transforming the philanthropic culture at York House School, Laura lives with her two daughters (when Amelia is home from McGill), husband, mum and two dogs five minutes from York House. She loves her book club, reading, walking and travel. She visits China and Hong Kong regularly and has developed a keen interest in Chinese culture. She is blessed to have many friends whom she couldn't survive without, including YHS and CAISAP colleagues. She is passionate about volunteering sitting on five boards including nine years for CARE Canada based in Ottawa, with whom she has made field visits to India and Africa. In addition to CAISAP and AFP, she sits on the Vancouver Whistler Games Network, and West coast Womens' Health Foundation Boards. Apparently staying busy keeps her out of trouble!
