Happy New Year!
CAISAP is starting the year off with two new exciting projects.
In conjunction with CCAE, Ridley College’s Jay Goulart is conducting a webinar on January 26th - Web 2.0: The Essentials for Independent Schools. Those of you who had the privilege of hearing Jay speak at our last National Conference, know that this is not to be missed. This webinar partnership with CCAE is just one of the many ways that CAISAP is striving to provide economical and inspiring professional development for our members. The cost is $150 + taxes per site. Click here to register.
CAISAP is also now reaching out to members through LinkedIN. Sharon Cozens, who is leading our CAISAP Mentorship Program, has started a LinkedIn Mentor Sub-group to encourage mentorship and sharing among our colleagues. If you haven’t already joined our CAISAP group please link up with us.
I encourage you to take advantage of our Regional Professional Developement opportunities listed in this issue. These events are a wonderful way for you to connect and learn with other CAISAP members in your region. And thank you to all our Regional PD organizers for making these events possible. CAISAP is fortunate to have dedicated volunteers coast to coast.
Best wishes for a successful 2010!

A New Way to Share Advancement Advice
|
 |
|
By: Sharon Cozens, Trafalgar School for Girls
"Dear Abby" comes to mind when I write the words advancement advice’ in this heading. I admit I am no Abby, but I do want to inform all CAIS Advancement Professionals of a way to exchange information and or advice via the CAISAP Group and the CAISAP Mentor Program Subgroup on LinkedIN.
Some of you may not know what LinkedIN is (See: http://press.linkedin.com/about.) In short, it's sort of a "Facebook for professionals". Some of you don't know what Facebook is...well, you may need extra mentoring! Regardless, the CAISAP executive has already found this to be a valuable tool. We invite all members of CAISAP to join: www.linkedin.com/reg/join. Our group includes approved CAISAP members and people who have provided resources to us in the past (i.e. conference speakers, etc.).
The Mentor Program subgroup is a way to get information quickly from our peers in the business. Rather than depend on one mentor to answer a question, a wider range of responses will be available to us. For those who wish to continue to work one on one with their mentor partner, we encourage you to continue. For others, this LinkedIn group will provide another option. If you’re interested in helping out as a mentor, or if you simply have a question and want a quick answer, please join the Mentor Program Subgroup.
These CAISAP groups will work best if more of us are using them. Posting a question or following a discussion on LinkedIn is like attending a CAISAP conference without leaving your desk. If you’ve been steering clear of all social networks, please consider joining just this one so that everyone can share his/her knowledge about advancement work.
For more info, please contact Sharon Cozens or Geneviève Delaquis.
For one-on-one mentoring, please complete and submit the forms found at www.caisap.ca/mentoring.asp.

One-on-One Mentoring

Over breakfast at the last CAISAP Conference in Banff, I met Claire Lynch who was new to Mulgrave School in the role of Director of Advancement. She asked if I could pair her with a Mentor. I introduced her to Lori Adam, Director of Annual Fund at St. Michaels University School. Here's their story:
"I was floundering until I met Lori", says Claire. "She gave me a clear sense of direction and purpose. I have not looked back since. It's been a hugely valuable experience." The pair do not speak as often as they'd like to, but according to Claire, the best thing about having a mentor is "having someone to call when you need advice or encouragement!”. Lori says, "I feel that the experience is definitely valuable. I find it to be a two-way learning experience as I’ve learned from Claire’s experience as well. I’m looking forward to seeing the results of going paperless in Mulgrave’s appeal this year."
The two connected at the beginning of the summer, at the start of the school year, and at the beginning of the new term in January. Claire's questions have mainly been about Annual Giving strategy planning and follow-up. Lori says, "Although I don’t feel I’ve been a whole lot of help to Claire since she’s so self-driven and had good experience prior to our meeting, I do enjoy following up to see how it’s going and to hear what’s worked and what’s not worked. There’s a sense of fulfillment in knowing that someone can learn from your own experiences."
The pair would highly recommend being part of a mentor team. They like the informality (which has worked for them) and have found it a great way to learn about one another’s schools as well as build a friendship along the way.

Bright Ideas - If It Works, Share It!
|
 |
CAISAP is committed to encouraging the sharing of ideas between our members and their independent schools. In each eQuarterly we will highlight a topic or insight from a colleague. This is a great way for you to share what's going on at your school, or to find out what others are doing at their school. If you have a Bright Idea for the next newsletter, email info@caisap.ca .
Video a picture is worth a thousand thank yous
Many CAIS schools are employing a new stewardship tool to enhance their giving programs. Thank you videos offer a very compelling vehicle that is easy to distribute to parents, alumni and other constituents via email or on the web.
Timed with the holiday giving season, sending a thank you video that illustrates the power of giving to all of your constituents can enhance you school’s Annual Giving participation rate.
Not all videos must be professionally commissioned. Some schools employ their own students and faculty to create the videos. Another option is to seek out a film student who may donate their time to the school to gain experience working on this type of project.
Here are a few examples of this wonderful way to say thanks!
